We’re five days into the New Year. What promises have you already broken?

Did you know that gyms actually bet that you will fail? Gyms oversell their memberships, knowing that after about 3 weeks, the gyms won’t be packed and that most who bought their memberships will fail to show up.

Do you want to be that statistic and someone else’s profit for breaking commitments?

Probably not.

Here’s a challenge for you.

What’s your B.H.A.G for 2021? That’s a Big Hairy Audacious Goal. In Jim Collin’s book from Good to Great, he describes this. An example of a BHAG is serving one million people food baskets in one year. Or, 250 workouts in one year. The key is that it’s big and measurable.

Yet, it’s not just about the goal itself.

A friend is seeking inclusion on the 2021 biking Olympic team. It’s not only about getting more workouts in. It became a fun challenge to see how he could shave off seconds and even minutes off the time trials. After years of continuing to eat burgers and ice cream, he attempted a vegetarian diet.

Suddenly, with each race, he became faster and faster on the bike. Holy cow!

He realized that even the smallest cheat on his nutrition delved into longer times on the bike. He became super disciplined and committed to his goal. Now, he’s open to seeing what other aspects he can tweak.

Who he has become in the process has been remarkable! More energized. More friendly. More open to new ways of recovery and nutrition. Something he never even considered before.

On a scale of 1-10, how committed are you to your goal? 1 is not so much, and 10 is I’ll do everything possible to hit it. If you’re not a 9 or 10, it’s time to rethink why this is a goal for you.

When everyone vows to lose weight in the new year, they forget the most important part. Why? It’s not about losing 20lbs or whatever the number may be. It’s really about having more energy to spend with others. It’s about feeling confident in their clothes. It’s about having the energy to engage others.

2021 will only be different if you internally change something about yourself. The biggest question of all is, who will you commit to becoming in the process?

If your commitment is to your character, you will surely reach your big hairy audacious goal.
