The African Proverb states, “It takes a village to raise a child.”

After two decades of owning his own company, Jim looked in the mirror one morning, and said, “what happened?” Bags under his eyes, gray hair, and an overwhelming, sickly look to his face.

Jim loved to solve problems. In his business, he was the go to person for everything. He wrote sales proposals. He fixed equipment for his crews. Jim handled interpersonal conflicts among his employees. He wasn’t the CEO. Jim was the Chief Everything Officer. Because he handled everything, this slowly took its toll on everyone else he loved and cherished.

Jim lost the intimacy with his wife and never saw his children grow up. Jim worked 16 hours a day and slept all day on Sunday to recuperate. He fixed every nook and cranny problem in his business letting every other aspect of his life slowly slide away.

Too often in life, you think that its up to you to accomplish every little task and take care of every problem that comes your way.

What Jim never realized is that he drew all the problems to him since he was unwilling to let others assist him. It took over two decades for Jim to realize he had a control issue. For the next two years, he taught his employees to resolve issues without coming to him. He found time to spend with each of his children and rekindle the romance with his wife.

The funny thing is that we all want to see each other succeed in life, right?

Where can you let go of control and ask for assistance?

If you want to feel more energized, stop trying to do it all yourself. Seek guidance. Identify resources to propel you along your own journey.

Imagine if your goal was to grow beautiful flowers. Most you are trying to be the sun, the rain, the dirt, the seed and the bees to pollinate the flower. What if instead you were only the seed and sought the assistance of the sun, rain, dirt, and bees to grow?

You will grow faster and better together.

Sometimes you’re the teacher and sometimes you’re the student. Life is constant learning.
